Burundi ‘s Attorney General has denied allegations by human rights organisations about the existence of mass graves in the country.
Amnesty International presented satellite photos of at least six mass graves detected in the capital, Bujumbura.
“After investigation, no mass graves have been discovered in the places mentioned in the reports of some NGOs,” Valentin Bagorikunda said, based on the “final report” of a commission of inquiry that he had established on December 17.
According to Amnesty International, these graves contain bodies of people killed during a recent repression in the neighbourhoods of Bujumbura.
The Attorney General announced the discovery of a mass grave of bodies he claimed were people killed by protesters during clashes at Mutaraka located north-west of the capital.
According to one of the killers arrested, about 30 bodies are said to be in the grave.
